The Enfield Poltergeist: A Glimpse Into the Story Behind The Conjuring 2

It was August of 1977 when a young single mother of four children, Peggy Hodgson, called local authorities in Enfield, England to her home claiming that two of her daughters were experiencing some sort of attacks that she could not explain. It was a phone call that would set off a chain of events that no one involved could have foreseen.

First responders noted evidence of a disturbance and one policewoman even attested that she saw a chair move on its own, though she would later recant and say she could not be certain that someone hadn’t moved it without her seeing.

Over the following two years, the Hodgson family would experience their own personal hell on earth. What had begun as an unexplained wobbling of her children’s beds quickly escalated as pieces of furniture began to move of their own accord, strange knocking sounds emanated from the walls and ceiling, and as the events became more violent, the children themselves were thrown about the room and spoke in voices that were not their own.

A poltergeist haunting literally feeds off the kinetic energy of the living involved, and it can be a terrifying cycle to behold. As activity happens, small movements or strange noises, set off the reaction from the living. The living person’s fearful energy is absorbed by the poltergeist which allows it to cause more movement and louder noises which, in turn, cause greater panic and energy to feed the entity. You get the picture. With four younger children and a frightened, confused mother, the Hodgson home was a perfect set up for a feeding frenzy by this entity.

As word of the poltergeist activity spread throughout the country and soon around the world, paranormal investigators and skeptics alike flocked to the Hodgsons’ council house to investigate the strange goings on that continued to plague the family.

Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair from the Society for Psychical Research were convinced early on that the haunting was real, though they did wonder about the truth of the children’s claims from time to time. Others doubted from the beginning and were vocal in their protests against the family.

Needless to say, it wasn’t long before Ed and Lorraine Warren heard about the activity and made their way to England to seek the truth for themselves and lend a hand to a family in need. Over the course of their investigation, the Warrens became convinced that legitimate activity was taking place in the family home.

Many of the skeptics claimed that the photos taken of the girls being thrown around the room were faked and that the girls were actually jumping in the photos. Ed, in his notes on the case however, observed that one of the girls levitated while asleep, and that even if the girls were hysterically acting out at times that could not account for all of the activity. He was convinced that the children had unknowingly called a demonic force into the house by routinely playing with a ouija board.

Through all the investigations, through all of the tireless hours, no conclusion was ever reached that everyone could agree upon. The one thing we do know for sure is that in the fall of 1978, the activity began to subside but never fully went away.

This is a story that was made for film and with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again teaming up to portray Ed and Lorraine Warren, it’s safe to say that The Conjuring 2 is going to be one hell of a movie. Don’t miss it in theaters on June 10!
